Regional Meeting: Strengthening Regional Work on Gender-based Violence
On November 8th and 9th almost 100 activists, practitioners and researchers came together in Kampala to spend two days of focused dialogue and learning on GBV work in the region. The meeting was hosted by the Interagency Gender Working Group (IGWG), USAID/EARO, PATH, Raising Voices and the GBV Prevention Network.
The purpose of the meeting was to bring together organizations and experts working on GBV to:
- share state of the art tools and promising interventions
- strengthen capacity of local organizations
- facilitate exchange between regional actors
- develop future strategies for future GBV programming in the regions
The meeting included participants from UN agencies, NGOs, CBOs, USAID, policy makers and donor agencies. There were representatives from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Somalia, Uganda, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, Malawi, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Swaziland, United States and Nicaragua. Many members of the GBV Prevention Network participated in the meeting.

On November 10th there was a special field visit to Raising Voices and the Center for Domestic Violence Prevention. Visitors were able to visit a number of community-based activities to prevent domestic violence including: a journalist seminar, a community drama performance, or a community dialogue.
