Regional Dialogue

Raising Voices and UN-HABITAT's Safer Cities Programme hosted a Regional Dialogue, Preventing Gender-based Violence: Sharing Experiences, Breaking New Ground in Kampala, Uganda from 4th - 6th September 2003. The first of its kind in the region, the Dialogue brought together over 30 leaders of NGOs and Local Authorities in the Horn, East and Southern Africa working on GBV prevention. During this meeting, each organization presented their work, shared lessons learned and suggested key programmatic priorities for working on GBV prevention in the region.

The Kampala Declaration: Prevent GBV in Africa emerged from the proceedings and participants at the Regional Dialogue. The Declaration brings together the voices of all the Dialogue participants and makes recommendations for programme implementation for civil society and local authorities. It also calls on UN agencies, the African Union, governments, funding agencies and civil society groups to take action to prevent GBV. The Kampala Declaration has been signed by more than 500 individuals and is used as an advocacy tool in the regions.

The proceedings of the Regional Dialogue highlight the various prevention programs discussed in the meeting as well as detailing the lessons learned about GBV prevention within the region.
