Winnie Amono is the Administrative Officer at Raising Voices. Winnie comes to Raising Voices with extensive customer service experience. She has a diploma in tours and travel and a certificate in airline computer applications. Winnie assists with financial management, logistics and organizing, stores and supplies, and general management of the office. She consistently meets challenges with determination and good spirit.

Sarah Kangave is the Finance and Administration Officer at Raising Voices. Sarah has a great deal of experience working with finance, administration and accounting for various nonprofit and private-sector organizations in Kampala, as well as in London. She brings with her a wealth of organizational skills and knowledge of easy-to-use systems that keep Raising Voices running smoothly.

Jean Kemitare is a Senior Program Officer for Raising Voices and is in charge of coordinating activities and communications for the Gender-Based Violence Prevention Network. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Makerere University and is currently pursuing a masters degree in Social Sector Planning and Management from the same university. Jean is experienced in community development, research and advocacy, and is an advocate for approaches and strategies that lead to the real empowerment of African women and protection of their rights.

Evelyn Letiyo is a Senior Program Officer in the Violence against Women department at Raising Voices. She holds a master’s degree in Social Sector Planning and Management (MASSPM) and Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and Social Administration (B.SWSA) from Makerere University. She is responsible for training, technical support and advocacy in the VAW department. Evelyn is a feminist who is actively involved in national and regional feminist organizing. She has five years of lecturing, research and training experience and is passionate about women issues.

Lori Michau is co-founder and co-director of Raising Voices. She coordinates the Violence against Women Program. Lori’s primary interest lies in translating policy into creative programs that work on the ground. Prior to Raising Voices she worked in Mwanza, Tanzania with kuleana, Center for Child Rights and was also a founding member and Program Development Coordinator of Jijenge! Women's Center for Sexual Health. Lori believes strongly in primary prevention approaches to violence against women and has authored various books and publications on the issue. Lori received an MA in Human Rights from Makerere University in Uganda in 2003.

Prossy Jonker Nakanjako is a Senior Programme Officer for the Department of Preventing Violence against Children at Raising Voices, responsible for the media program on violence against children. She holds a masters degree in International Development Studies from the International School of Humanities and Social Sciences (ISHSS) - University of Amsterdam and a B.A. in Literature and Mass Communication from Makerere University, Kampala. Prossy has experience as public relations officer and has practiced journalism for several years reporting for credible newspapers in Uganda. She has special interest in children rights issues.

Dipak Naker co-founded Raising Voices in 1999 and as a Co-Director, works particularly in the area of preventing violence against children. He was formerly one of the Directors at Kuleana Center for Child Rights in Mwanza Tanzania. As a part of a small team, he also founded Jijenge! Women's Center for Sexual Health, in Mwanza and served as the Project Leader for the first 18 months. He is a skilled facilitator of capacity building processes and has worked with various international agencies as a Consultant. Dipak has written and edited several substantive publications.

Janet Nakuti is a Senior Program Officer in the area of Monitoring and Documentation for the Violence against Women and Children departments. She holds a Masters Degree in Human rights, Post-Graduate Diploma in Project Planning and Management and a Bachelors Degree in Sociology from Makerere University. Janet has worked with a number of international organizations involved in community development work like Save the Children, UPHOLD Uganda, specifically on advocacy, mentoring program stakeholders, training and research in multiple fields with both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Her interests are particularly in community development work, specifically upholding the rights of women and children.

Clinton Okecha is the Guard/ Messenger/ Office Assistant at Raising Voices. He helps with general maintenance, in running errands, and takes care of the things that need to get done to keep the office running. He has recently earned a driving certificate to assist in driving vehicles as well as the office motorbike. In addition to his work at Raising Voices, Clinton is also the Chairman of his local area.

Gladys Rachiu is the Office Assistant at Raising Voices. Gladys helps ensure that the office runs smoothly. She is responsible for the general office upkeep, delivery of mail and messages, photocopying, media scans, filing and many other tasks. Gladys also makes the best tea and coffee anyone has ever tasted!

Willington Ssekkadde is the Good Schools Program Officer. He holds a BA degree in Social Sciences from Makerere University. He has a strong background in research on violence against children and education for a variety of National and International research and advocacy organizations. He enjoys listening to children and believes in finding ways to use children’s own experiences and imaginations to find solutions to the problems that face them.

Resource Persons

Heidi Jo Brady is a freelance photographer who specializes in children. In her extensive travels in Uganda, Tanzania and South Africa, she seeks to capture the human experience with dignity and compassion. Heidi is the primary photographer for Raising Voices. Chanda Chevannes is a skilled documentary film producer/director. She believes that filmmaking can be used as a powerful tool for social change. Chanda has produced two educational videos for Raising Voices, and remains involved as a communications consultant. Together with her partner, Nathan Shields, she produces films for The People's Picture Company.

Stephanie Sauve is a specialist with words, writing, and story. She uses a personal and interactive approach with all of her clients, helping them craft their message and enhance their voice. Sara Siebert is a Technical Advisor for the Violence against Women Programme, and specializes in competency-based training and mentoring of program staff and volunteers. She holds a Master’s Degree in Public Health from University of California Los Angeles and a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Iowa. She has worked over the past 13 years to prevent and respond to violence against women in jobs within Uganda, Papua New Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Cote d’Ivoire, El Salvador and the United States.

Marco Tibasima is a talented artist who brings ideas to life! Marco's work appeals to audiences of all ages, he injects humor and energy into his art. He works in a variety of media including fine art, comics, large street art, and magazines. Marco began his career with kuleana Center for Child Rights and now works as a freelance artist for a variety of Tanzanian and international organizations working to promote social justice. The Tides Center is 501(c)3 umbrella organization based in the USA with to over 500 social justice projects. Tides Center staff support the financial and administrative departments at Raising Voices.

 

CEDOVIP Staff

Tina Musuya is the Coordinator for Center for Domestic Violence Prevention responsible for all programmatic oversight and ensuring the smooth running of the office. She completed a Social Sciences Honours degree in Sociology at Makerere University Kampala, and an MA in Sociology. Tina has 5 years experience working closely with institutions and the communities with special emphasis on advocating for women's rights and the prevention of domestic violence.

Hope Turyasingura is the Technical Advisor at CEDOVIP. She has been in the women's movement in Uganda for over 10 years. Formerly she was working as a training and credit officer at National Association of Women's Organizations in Uganda (NAWOU). Hope has been working with Center for Domestic Violence Prevention (CEDOVIP) since its inception in 2000. She has a Diploma in Music, Dance and Drama from Makerere University, a certificate in Education and a certificate in public administration and management. Hope also has a Bachelors Degree in Social Sciences, specializing in Gender and Development and has undergone several short courses on gender, human rights and counseling. Hope is currently pursuing an MA in Human Rights and is a passionate activist for women's rights.

Josephine Kamisya is the National Domestic Violence Prevention Initiative Officer at CEDOVIP. She is working toward an MA Degree in Peace and Conflict Studies and holds a BA Honors Degree in Development Studies from Makerere University. Josephine has several years of hands-on experience in mobilizing communities to promote human rights and prevention of domestic violence. Josephine is very motivated to work towards creating an enabling environment for women to live a life free of violence, and to see them treated with respect at home and in the communities they live in. She has interest to learn and grow as a professional.

Brenda Kugonza is the Media and Advocacy Officer at CEDOVIP. She has worked with a number of national and international women’s organizations, doing work with violence against women, gender mainstreaming, economic empowerment of women, and promotion of girl child education. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences from Makerere University. She has extensive experience leading programs that promote women’s rights. She is also a founder of Bunyoro Women’s Development Initiative, which started in 2003.

Yvette Alal is Program Officer for the Institutional Strengthening program at CEDOVIP. She is holds a bachelors degree in Adult and Community Education from Makerere University and a certificate in Voluntary Testing and Counseling in HIV/AIDS from the Institute of Advanced Leadership. Yvette has 4 years experience in mobilizing communities to address human rights challenges especially the prevention of domestic violence. Yvette believes that if everyone chooses to have violence free homes, then we will have violence free communities and violence free countries -- and that motivates her to work towards non violence.

Denis Kizito Odok is the Senior Administrator and Accountant at CEDOVIP. Denis holds a BA in Commerce from Makerere University and a diploma in Business Studies also from Makerere University Business School. He is also a student member of Level III Certified Public Accountant of Uganda. He has worked for human rights organizations in Northern Uganda and the Central Region.

Rose Muduwa is the Office Assistant at CEDOVIP and responsible for a myriad of details that keep the center running. Rose assists program staff in monitoring community activities, is a Secretary for Women in her Local Council Government, and secretary for finance for LC2 in Nsooba East. She is a pastor at Rock of Ages Faith Ministries in Mulago.

Olive Nabisubi is a staff member with the Local Activism program at CEDOVIP. She holds a BA in Development Studies from Makerere University and several certificates, including a Certificate in Counseling of Domestic Violence Survivors, Good Clinical Practice and Subject Protection, and Qualitative and Quantitative Participatory Research. Before joining CEDOVIP, she worked as a research assistant with Raising Voices on the baseline research for the SASA! program. Prior to that, she worked as a Behavioral Assistant Researcher with the Rakai Health Sciences Program in Southern Uganda for 2 years. She likes working with communities, especially with vulnerable populations like women and children—to be a voice for the voiceless.

Wateya Peter Nangoye is the driver for CEDOVIP. He is in charge of transport for staff and general maintenance of the CEDOVIP vehicle. Peter has been driving since 1987 and has his International Driving Permit as well as certificates in defensive driving. Peter does much more than drive – he promotes non-violence and women’s rights wherever he goes!

Paul Bbuzibwa is an intern with CEDOVIP since October 2008, supporting all departments of CEDOVIP. He holds a BA degree in Social Sciences from Makerere University and several certificates, including Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and a Certificate in Counselling from Makerere University, as well as a Certificate in Human Rights from an NGO called Youth for Human Rights International. Before joining CEDOVIP, Paul worked as a Counsellor in Kalisizo Hospital and as a Community Development Officer Intern in Rakai. As an activist and someone who has studied domestic violence issues, Paul is most interested in influencing policies and grassroots community beliefs to be changed to suit all of us—men, women and children.
