On Monday, January 25th 2010, a national newspaper in Uganda, The Daily Monitor published a false story about Raising Voices. The story claimed that we supported the anti-homosexuality bill currently under debate in Uganda. The article wrongly stated that we sponsored a children’s march in support of the legislation and fabricated a homophobic quote and attributed it to a senior staff member at Raising Voices.

In response, we demanded a public apology and retraction from the Monitor, which they published on Wednesday, January 27th, 2010 (click here for print version or online at http://www.monitor.co.ug/News/National/-/688334/848820/-/whf0b9/-/index.html). We also published a Statement of Position (click here) in the three national newspapers setting the record straight and affirming our opposition to this hateful legislation and our commitment to promoting the human rights of all people.

We greatly appreciate the support and solidarity expressed by so many of you during this challenging time. And look forward to continued collaboration as we struggle to ensure protection and promotion of these fundamental human rights.
