Research on Violence Against Children

Raising Voices, in collaboration with Save the Children in Uganda, undertook a qualitative research study on violence against children in Uganda. In five diverse districts of Uganda spanning the length and the breadth of the country, 1406 children were engaged in a dialogue about how they experience violence, the nature of the violence against them, what some their strategies are for coping with the violence and what response is needed to prevent the violence. 1093 adults were also consulted on what their beliefs are about violence against children and what their rationale is for perpetrating the violence.

The study addressed two questions:

  1. What is children's experience of the violence against them?
  2. How do adults rationalize the violence?

The findings of this study were published in April 2005 in Violence against Children: The Voices of Ugandan Children and Adults. This report presents the findings of the study in an accessible format. It aims to draw attention to the disconnection between actions and intentions as well as experiences and perceptions regarding violence against children.

The first part of the report describes the context and methodology for the study. The second part reports on the dialogue with the children and the third part on the dialogue with adults. The final part draws together the findings of the study to suggest recommendations for actions aimed at various duty-bearers.
