b) The Pilot Schools:

St. Peter’s Primary School-Kanyanya

St. Peter’s Primary School is a government-aided primary school, partially sponsored by the Catholic Church. It is located in Kanyanya, a parish of Kawempe division.

When asked why they wanted to partner with Raising Voices, head teacher Winfred Byansi said “To help teachers gain experience that will make us accept that alternatives to corporal punishment create a better learning environment. And to enable teachers to gain more knowledge and skills in how to handle children without imposing acts of violence against them so that other schools can learn from us.”

Mulago Secondary School, Kampala

Mulago Secondary School is a mixed day and boarding school that opened in February 2002. The school’s mission is “to provide and maintain high quality secondary education and to inculcate the culture of discipline.”

“One of the areas of great success with our partnership with Raising Voices,” said head teacher Mujuzi Hakim. “Is that you cannot even think of caning here. And we have not had any major discipline problems.”

“There are so many other aspects to improving discipline,” he says. “If you improve the environment, students feel better about their school and about themselves.”

“Training, talking, and investment in the environment, all these steps are very crucial,” he adds. “You can’t just tell students they have the right not to be caned, without putting into place steps and infrastructure.”
