The purpose of this work is to conduct research with a broad range of children and adults about their conception and experience of violence against children and subsequently launch a national media campaign to generate a discussion about the issue.

Objective: To understand the nature and the extent of violence against children in Uganda.
Violence Against Children: The Voices of Ugandan Children and Adults
This publication discusses a research study undertaken in five districts in Uganda with 1400 children and 1100 adults. It reports on the various types of violence children experience at home, schools and in the community as well as how it makes them feel and their ideas for creating a violence-free childhood. The study also reports on discussions with adults about how they conceptualise punishment discipline, mistreatment and violence, and how they too feel about the issues. The report ends with recommendations for protecting and promoting children’s rights to live free of violence.

Creating Safer Schools: Lessons Learned; Strategies for Action
Raising Voices, in collaboration with The Ford Foundation, hosted a forum in Nairobi, Kenya, for discussing the status quo in schools and developing workable responses. The forum brought together 15 experienced professionals over a period of two days to share their perspectives and develop practical strategies for action.
This report is the result of this forum, where the aim was to collectively reflect on what makes our schools unsafe, what responses we have come up with, and what we should be doing about it.

A multifaceted media campaign (radio, TV, newspaper) aimed at creating a climate of collective reflection towards preventing violence against children was launched in 2008. The aim is to create a nationwide discussion on why violence against children happens, how it happens, and how it can be prevented.
Specific Objectives:
- To initiate and foster a public discourse and action on the issue of violence against children with a broad cross section of community members in Uganda.
- To promote an understanding of children’s experience of violence against them and the broader consequences of the violence for the community.
See examples of the Radio Campaign, TV Campaign or Newspaper Campaign.
