Radio Dramas
Based on the film “Through My Eyes", the radio dramas are 30 minutes each and narrate true stories of four children’s experiences of violence. Each drama is a story about children’s ingenuity, resilience and humanity despite the violence they experience. Click on the titles below to download and listen to each of the dramas.
For Amina, the bustle of a busy suburb of Kampala appears to mirror her own state of mind. On the streets, men make sexual advances at her; at school, a teacher targets her as the object of his desire. Amina is a story of many young girls in Uganda who struggle to escape the sexual violence they encounter from all corners of their day-to-day lives. It portrays the ingenuity they must summon, the odds they have to beat to simply have access to opportunities to fulfil their ambitions.
FestusAround the beautiful hills on the shores of Lake Bunyonyi in Western Uganda, the sight of the sunset conjures sad memories for Festus. After losing both parents, Festus' aunt agrees to 'take him in', together with his parents' property. This radio drama is about grief and one child's struggle to retain dignity in the face of adults' inhumanity.
Juma and his friend decide to step outside the school compound without permission to enjoy a meal of their dream. Just as their desire is about to be fulfilled, they are discovered by the headmaster, unleashing a fury, neither of the friends could imagine. School is supposed to be the refuge of a growing spirit, yet for Juma and his friend, this experience will change their view of the world forever.
In the dusty town of Gulu, Ajara's disability becomes a metaphor for the life that is falling apart around her. From the cruelty of words to the damage of deeds, her stepgrather tries to break her spirit. However, with Ajara's resilience and a little help from her uncle, she discovers that spirit is a hard thing to break.
Deborah
Deborah tries to escape sexual violence against her. She does not feel safe in places where she is supposed to be safe as she is betrayed by the people who are supposed to protect her. This radio drama is about her struggle to find a way of protecting herself.
Isaac
Isaac struggles to retain his dignity in the face of economic violence in his day-to-day life particularly engineered by his father. Lucky for him, he finds a window of escape through his school teacher who takes it upon herself to confront his exploitative father.Deno
Deno experiences a lot of emotional pain. He is humiliated, frightened, embarrassed and made to feel bad in many ways because of the way he is treated and also because of the bad words that are said to him. Even when his dignity is diminished further after he is forced to clean his sibling’s excrement with his bare hands, Deno refuses to give up and screams until a neighbor comes to his rescue.Sandra
Listen to Sandra’s story, a child who experiences physical violence because of her disability. Society somehow thinks that children with a disability are inferior to other children which makes them even more vulnerable to violence. However, the presence of a disability does not mean that one is helpless. Sandra’s resilience in spite of the violence she has experienced demonstrates this.
