Who We Are
The Center for Domestic Violence Prevention (CEDOVIP) is a local civil society organization committed to preventing violence against women. CEDOVIP has worked at the grassroots level in poor communities since 2000 and is seen by many as one of the leading local non-governmental organizations working on violence prevention in Uganda today. CEDOVIP works in close partnership with Raising Voices.
History
CEDOVIP’s work began in 2000 under a tripartite partnership between National Association of Women’s Organizations (NAWOU), Raising Voices and Action Aid Uganda. This partnership led to a community-based pilot project to prevent domestic violence titled ‘Mobilizing Communities to Prevent Domestic Violence: A Resource Guide for Organizations in East and Southern Africa’,developed by Raising Voices. From 2000-2002, it operated as the Domestic Violence Prevention Project. In 2003, due to the strength and success of the project, it became an independent organization known as the Center for Domestic Violence Prevention (CEDOVIP).
Over the past eight years, CEDOVIP has worked to influence change in attitudes, beliefs and practices that perpetuate violence against women through promoting the protection of women’s rights and gender equality. It has created activism against domestic violence, promoted national prevention of violence against women, and also brought about new focus to legislative and policy reform on key violence against women issues in Uganda.
CEDOVIP’s work is supported by The American Jewish World Service, Irish Aid, Elton John Aids Foundation, Raising Voices, Foundation Open Society Institute, United Nations Development Programme and Global Fund for Human Rights.
CEDOVIP’s Objectives:
- Engage community members, local institutions and policy makers in Kampala District (Rubaga and Makindye Divisions) in re-thinking their use of power, particularly in intimate relationships in order to create more equitable and safe relationships.
- Promote understanding, interest and skills in violence against women prevention work in at least ten communities in Uganda and eight districts in the Busoga sub region through coordination and capacity-building of civil society organizations and 42 community development officers in local government structures.
- Create supportive environments through influencing change in attitudes, behaviors, policy and practice to uphold women’s rights and safety in Uganda.
Program Areas
CEDOVIP works at three levels that build on and strengthen each other:
- The Grassroots
- Civil society
- Influencing change in policy and practice within government institutions
By placing its focus on these three levels, CEDOVIP is able to build environments that are supportive of women’s rights to safety and equality, from the grassroots up. The three program areas are:
- SASA! Mobilizing Communities to Prevent Violence against Women and HIV
- National Prevention of Violence against Women (NPVAW)
- National Advocacy for Violence against Women Prevention.
